How do I buy a car from a private person?
Follow our buying tips
Pick up a purchase form at any auto insurance company
We can't stress how important it is to confirm rightful ownership. Ask for proof, recent mail addressed to the seller, tax notice, car insurance, these should all match up with the seller’s driver’s license. All private sales are "Buyer beware"
We recommend that you take the following steps to ensure that your experience is successful and safe. Using common sense and following our guidelines and tips will greatly reduce risks. Remember... If it sounds too good to be true then it probably isn`t...
Use common sense
Ask the seller questions before entering into a financing deal or buying an item and verify your sellers contact information.
Avoid transactions where the seller only accepts cash or instant cash wire transfer.
Never pay more then $100 for a deposit on a car. If the deal goes south, you might not get your cash back, if the seller insists on more, use a third party such as a Notary Public to hold the funds.
Finance thru your bank or thru other trusted establishments.
Make sure your method of payment offers protection. Use a certified cheque and have the title transferred over immediately. Never leave the payment without receiving the item!
WE don't recommend buying sight unseen; this service is to provide a better selection for those living in the Kootenay area. The power of the Internet just helps narrow down the search.
Keep a record of all sales, and get everything in writing. Including your down payment amount, if the down payment is refundable, how long will the seller wait, what's included (stereo, winter tires....) and make note of any scratches and dents at time of negotiation and have the seller sign.
